Updates from Abu-Shouk IDP Camp, El Fasher

(Kampala) – Darfur Network for Human Rights (DNHR) Reports:

June 25, 2024: One of the worst massacres occurred at Abu-Shouk IDP camp since the start of June. The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) bombarded the camp’s northern side with approximately 20 bombs, resulting in about 30 civilian deaths and the destruction of property and shelter centres. Civilians are evacuating due to continuous bombing, and mass graves are being used for the dead.

June 26, 2024: Bombing continued in the northern part of El Fasher city and surrounding areas.

June 28, 2024:  At 7 PM, another RSF attack occurred in the east-western side of Abu-Shouk camp and parts of the city, resulting in civilian deaths. DNHR is yet to verify the exact number of victims.

June 29, 2024: Bombing resumed at 8 AM and continued until 5 PM on the camp’s eastern and northern sides. Confirmed deaths stand at two, with the number of injured unverified.

Civilians, unable to return to their localities, are fleeing to safer places. The situation mirrors the suffering of those who fled during the Darfur war in 2003. The humanitarian crisis is escalating due to inadequate health services. Only one medical centre remains operational, with depleted staff.

July 1, 2024: Around 9 am, RSF attacked Tijaniya Mosque with a drone attack, leading to the death of eight civilians and injuring eleven.

One bomb also fell on the children’s hospital, displacing most of the children under treatment. IDPs are digging trenches covered with wood to protect themselves from random bombings.

DNHR’s Appeal:

DNHR urgently calls on the RSF to stop targeting the camp, where the population is already vulnerable and in despair. DNHR also appeals to the international community to intervene immediately to prevent further loss of life and alleviate the humanitarian crisis.
