Ground Updates from Sudan

(Kampala) – The Darfur Network for Human Rights (DNHR) has received the following updates from the ground:

Omdurman:

On 30 August 2024, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) carried out extensive shelling in residential areas of Omdurman, including Kariri locality, El Thawra, and Ombada. According to a statement by the Ministry of Health, the shelling targeted residential areas and Souk El Bear, the only remaining market in the area, along with the Chinese Hospital and parts of El Thawra.

The reported casualties include 7 civilians, among them 3 women and 1 child. Additionally, 25 people were injured, with 17 cases being treated at the emergency department of Al Nao Hospital in Omdurman. Most of these injuries were from the Beer Hamad area, with other cases reported from Elhoda Jail Residency, Elharra 13, and Elharra 31. The Military Hospital Helipad also reported 10 injuries and 3 deaths.

North Darfur Updates:

Kassab IDP Camp, Kutum Locality:

On 1 September 2024, Kassab IDP Camp in Kutum locality experienced a dire situation as heavy rains, which had persisted since mid-August, caused severe damage. The prolonged rains resulted in the collapse of homes, leading to the tragic loss of lives and properties.

Five civillian died on the morning of 1 September after their homes collapsed due to the rain and weak housing structures. Among the victims were three sisters who perished after their home collapsed in Kassab:

1. Omnia Abdulah 

2. Marwa Abdulah 

3. Safaa Abdulah 

Another unidentified body was found at the same location. Injuries were also reported as the rain continued, making the area increasingly hazardous for the refugees.

Abu Shouk IDP Camp:

On 1 September 2024, at approximately 4:00 PM, the RSF launched an attack targeting Abu Shouk IDP Camp and the surrounding residential areas. Five bombs were dropped in different areas of the camp, particularly affecting Block 5, Block 6, the eastern part of the camp, and the sheltering centre near El Salaam Primary School for Boys. These areas were the most impacted by the shelling, which is believed to have originated from a cannon gun located in Sewelenga, a village approximately 2.5 kilometres northeast of Al Salam IDP Camp.

Later, at 6:00 PM, another attack targeted the military base and nearby villages around the big market. Two injuries were recorded in the camp, with further information to be provided as it becomes available.

from Mellit, North Darfur – El Fasher

On September 2, 2024, fourteen people were killed, and dozens were injured in an airstrike launched by the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) on Monday morning at the Al-Aish market in the city of Mellit, North Darfur State.

Monitoring reports from Mellit, provided to the Darfur Network for Human Rights (DNHR), indicate that the airstrike involved four missiles targeting the city. This attack resulted in the deaths of nine women and five men who were present in the Al-Aish market near the stadium.

This airstrike is the fourth instance of such attacks in just one day. The initial toll of fourteen fatalities includes eight women and two men in the Al-Aish market. Additionally, another missile struck the western neighborhood, leading to the deaths of an elderly woman named Aisha and two men, Jar Al-Nabi and Abdul Salam, near the health insurance office.

The repeated airstrikes on populated areas, particularly residential neighborhoods, have caused significant civilian casualties and highlight the ongoing dangers faced by residents in North Darfur.
