On September 1, 2024, in North Darfur State, the RSF continued its military operations against residential neighborhoods and IDP camps.
Around 4:00 PM, the RSF initiated an artillery bombardment targeting AbuShouk IDP camp, during which approximately four shells were fired. The shells struck several locations within the camp, including the eastern side of the Child-Friendly Square, Block 5, Square 6, the Peace 9 Basic Shelter for Boys, and a water pond.
The shelling originated from the northeastern direction of the camp, specifically from a village called Suwailinga in District 5, which is located about 2.5 kilometers northeast of the Peace Abu Ja camp. Notably, the artillery site responsible for the shelling is mobile, shifting between various directions.
At 6:00 PM, the shelling expanded to encompass the neighborhoods around the Grand Market, the city center, and the vicinity of the military command. Initial reports indicate that two individuals were wounded inside the camp.
The systematic targeting of civilians and camps by the Rapid Support Forces is considered a serious crime and a blatant violation of human rights, constituting a breach of international laws that safeguard civilians in conflict zones.
The ongoing attacks by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on residential neighborhoods and IDP camps, especially the recent shelling of the Abu Shouk IDP camp, are deeply concerning.
These actions not only cause immediate harm to the civilian population but also represent a serious violation of international humanitarian law, which protects civilians in conflict zones. The situation underscores the urgent need for international intervention to protect the people in Darfur.
The systematic targeting of civilians and their shelters highlights the gravity of the situation and the importance of continued monitoring and advocacy to ensure accountability for these violations.
