(Kampala) – The Darfur Network for Human Rights (DNHR) is deeply alarmed by the escalating violence in El Fasher, North Darfur State, as credible reports have emerged despite ongoing communication blackouts and severe security challenges. On 12 September 2024, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) launched a coordinated attack on the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) and allied forces, including the Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM-Minawi), the Justice and Equality Movement, the Sudanese Alliance, and the Gathering of Sudan Liberation Forces, all led by Darfur Region Governor Minni Minnawi. The assault, which commenced at 11:00 AM from the east and southeast of El Fasher, continued for seven hours, marking the 132nd violent clash in the city since the conflict began last year on aPRIL 15.
While there have been no confirmed reports of civilian casualties at this time, the DNHR has verified the deaths of several high-ranking RSF commanders during the attack, including:
1. Colonel Issa Fodol, deputy to General Ali Yagoub, who was killed in El Fasher on 14 April 2024.
2. Commander Abdulrahman Garin Shatta.
3. Major El Sadig Belil.
4. Major Abuelgassim Ali Musa, office manager and leader of General Alnour Goba’s security guards.
The continuous clashes have forced civilians and internally displaced persons (IDPs) to flee El Fasher, seeking safety in other regions perceived as more secure, such as Jaba Mara, controlled by the Sudan Liberation Movement/Army under the leadership of Abdulwaheid (SLA/AW). The DNHR has documented numerous cases of displacement, highlighting the urgent need for humanitarian assistance and protection for those fleeing the violence.
DNHR urgently calls upon all parties to the conflict to adhere to their obligations under international humanitarian law and human rights law, ensuring the protection of civilians and the cessation of hostilities. The DNHR also appeals to the international community to take immediate action to address the humanitarian crisis unfolding in El Fasher and provide support to the displaced populations. Continued inaction will only exacerbate the suffering of the people of Darfur, who have already endured unimaginable hardship.
