(Kampala on September 20, 2024) – The Darfur Network for Human Rights (DNHR) is deeply concerned about the rapidly deteriorating situation in North Darfur, where civilians—particularly those in Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps—are enduring unbearable suffering. Both the joint forces allied with the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) are escalating the violence, resulting in widespread devastation.
Civilians, including children and humanitarian workers, are being caught in this destructive crossfire, leading to tragic loss of life and the destruction of essential infrastructure. The international community must intervene to halt these grave violations of human rights. “An SAF airplane bombed North Darfur El Fasher while the RSF fired rockets at civilians.”
Immediate actions should include:
Compelling RSF to cease rocket attacks on civilians:
The indiscriminate firing of rockets has caused unimaginable devastation in civilian areas. International pressure must be applied to force RSF to halt these attacks.
Imposing an arms embargo: This would help cut off the supply of weapons to both factions, reducing their ability to inflict further harm on innocent civilians.
Establishing a no-fly zone: This would protect civilians from SAF’s aerial bombardments, which have targeted residential areas, IDP camps, and vital infrastructure.
Deploying international peacekeeping forces: A robust peacekeeping mission under the UN or African Union should be sent to the region to safeguard civilians and ensure humanitarian assistance reaches those in need.
Accountability through international legal mechanisms: Both SAF and RSF leaders should be held accountable for war crimes and human rights violations through the International Criminal Court (ICC). Justice for the victims is essential for a sustainable peace.
The international community cannot afford to stand by as this humanitarian catastrophe unfolds. Urgent action is needed to protect civilians, restore stability, and bring those responsible for atrocities to justice.
