Urgent Report: Siege on Kalma IDP Camp by an Arab Armed Group in South Darfur State:

The Kalma Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Nyala, South Darfur, is facing a dire situation. As of October 13, 2024, an armed group has surrounded the camp, demanding the return of cattle they claim were stolen by the camp’s residents. The threat of violence is imminent, with the group issuing warnings to loot the camp if their demands are not met.

This is not the first time the camp has faced such aggression. On September 27, 2024, the same group abducted a 14-year-old boy, Al-Nour Ahmed, from Centre 8 within the camp, demanding compensation for the cattle or its return in exchange for his release. He was later freed after intervention from several parties, but tensions have since escalated.

Residents of the camp are deeply concerned for their safety and are pleading for immediate intervention. The Darfur Network Human Rights (DNHR) has called on the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which is responsible for the camp’s security, to protect the civilians. They have also issued an urgent appeal to the United Nations and the Security Council to take action and prevent further violence.

The situation is critical, and without prompt intervention, the already vulnerable population of Kalma camp faces potential violence and looting. The international community, as well as local authorities, need to respond urgently to prevent an escalation.
