The security situation in Zalingei, Central Darfur, is becoming increasingly tense, particularly for citizens and internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the camps. There is widespread fear and anxiety due to the presence of over 1,000 allied with Rapid Support Forces (RSF) with allowed soldiers who arrived in the area on October 13, 2024.
According to local reports, the RSF suspects that the IDP camps harbor supporters of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), which has heightened the risk of violence and raised concerns about the safety of the IDPs.
The RSF commander in the region has even requested the delegation of 20 individuals from the Hamidiya camp to meet with him, fueling further anxiety. The IDPs feel threatened by these accusations, and their safety, as well as their property, is at risk as a result of these tensions.
The Darfur Network for Human Rights (DNHR) continues to advocate for an immediate cessation of hostilities and urges the SAF and RSF to return to negotiations to establish peace. DNHR has also made an urgent appeal to the international community, particularly the UN Security Council, to intervene and protect civilians, focusing specifically on Darfur.
This situation underscores the need for increased humanitarian protection and urgent diplomatic efforts to prevent further regional escalation.
