International Memorial Day of the Victims of the Crime of Genocide

Today, on the International Memorial Day of the Victims of the Crime of Genocide, we reflect on one of the darkest chapters in Sudan’s history: the Darfur genocide.

Since 2003, hundreds of thousands of lives have been lost, millions displaced, and countless families torn apart by atrocities in Darfur. The deliberate targeting of communities based on their ethnicity reminds us of the catastrophic consequences of hatred, violence, and impunity.

The Darfur Network for Human Rights (DNHR) remains steadfast in its commitment to ensuring these crimes are never forgotten. By documenting human rights violations, advocating for accountability, and standing with survivors in their pursuit of justice, we work to honor the memory of those lost and build a future free from such atrocities.

As we remember the victims today, we also look ahead to an important moment in the fight for justice. From 11 to 13 December 2024, closing statements in the case The Prosecutor v. Ali Muhammad Ali Abd-Al-Rahman (“Ali Kushayb”) will take place at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague.

Mr. Abd-Al-Rahman faces 31 counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity, allegedly committed in Darfur between August 2003 and April 2004. This trial is a critical step in holding perpetrators accountable and seeking justice for the victims of the Darfur genocide.

The Trial Chamber I, composed of Presiding Judge Joanna Korner, Judge Reine Alapini-Gansou, and Judge Althea Violet Alexis-Windsor, will deliberate on the evidence presented by 56 prosecution witnesses, one victim witness, and 18 defence witnesses. The judgment will be pronounced in due course after these closing statements.

Genocide is not just a tragedy of the past—it is a call to action for the present. Let us honor the victims by committing ourselves to justice and prevention, ensuring that “Never Again” becomes a reality.
