For Immediate Release
The Darfur Network for Human Rights (DNHR) strongly condemns the artillery attack launched this morning by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on Abu Shouk IDP Camp in Blocks (23) and (24), El Fasher, North Darfur State. The attack resulted in the tragic death of more than 7 and three wounded civilians, including Ali Juma and two children under age 18 girls, Tuta Bit Haran and Ihsan Abdulrasoul.
This brutal assault constitutes a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law, which strictly prohibits the targeting of civilians, particularly in camps for displaced persons that are supposed to be safe havens for those fleeing conflict. The shelling has caused widespread panic among thousands of displaced residents and led to the destruction of shelters and property.
The Darfur Network for Human Rights calls for the following:
1. Immediate international intervention to stop attacks on civilians and ensure the protection of displaced persons.
2. A transparent and independent international investigation into this incident and accountability for those responsible for these crimes.
3. Strengthened humanitarian access to affected IDP camps to provide essential services and civilian protection.
The Darfur Network for Human Rights reaffirms its commitment to documenting violations and working with all relevant stakeholders to ensure justice and the protection of civilians in Darfur.
