On Thursday, January 9, 2025, the Sudanese Army acknowledged that soldiers captured in a viral video executing a civilian were members of its ranks. The army stated that the victim was identified as “one of the rebels,” according to an official statement.
The army’s press release confirmed, “Some social media platforms circulated a video showing one of the rebels who was arrested and killed by a soldier.” The act was described as “reprehensible” and an individual transgression. The army assured that the soldiers responsible for the crime had been arrested and would be tried in accordance with the Armed Forces Law.
The statement further emphasized:
“We affirm our full and strict adherence to international humanitarian law and the rules of engagement. All personnel who violate the law will be held accountable without mercy.”
The video, which circulated widely on social media, depicted a group of armed men wearing Sudanese Army uniforms assaulting an unarmed man in civilian clothing. The men accused the victim of being affiliated with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) before fatally shooting him on the spot.
The incident has sparked widespread condemnation from human rights activists and organizations. The Darfur Network for Human Rights (DNHR) issued a strong statement condemning the act, calling it a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law and basic human rights.
The DNHR stated:
“We strongly condemn this heinous act. Such actions represent a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law and basic human rights. Extrajudicial killings, especially of unarmed civilians, cannot and must not be tolerated under any circumstances.”
The organization emphasized the need for accountability within the armed forces and called for a transparent investigation to ensure justice:
“These incidents underscore the urgent need for accountability and strict adherence to the rules of engagement. We call for an impartial and transparent investigation to ensure justice is served and the perpetrators face the full force of the law.”
The DNHR also urged international bodies to remain vigilant and actively monitor the ongoing conflict, advocating for the protection of civilians and the prevention of further atrocities.
This shocking incident highlights the critical importance of enforcing international humanitarian law and protecting civilian lives in conflict zones. It also raises urgent questions about the accountability of armed forces in the face of growing unrest in Sudan.
