From February 11 to 13, 2025, a delegation from the European Union visited Wedwill Camp in South Sudan to evaluate the situation in the aftermath of President Trump’s freeze on humanitarian aid. Their visit also focused on the ongoing tensions between refugees and the host community.
Before arriving at the camp, the delegation first met with the Governor of Aweil State, followed by discussions with community leaders and representatives from local NGOs, including the Coordination of Refugee Assistance (CRA). The head of CRA informed the delegation that nine NGOs are actively operating in the camp, each contributing to various activities to support refugees.
The delegation visited the local NGOs operating within camp and speaking directly with refugees to gather detailed accounts of their living conditions. The refugees shared their concerns, expressing the urgent need for continued support in the areas of food, medical care, relocation, security, and education.
While the delegation had planned to return on February 14, 2025, to further engage with the refugees, their visit was postponed for security reasons following threats of an attack from the host community. Despite this, they left contact details for continued communication.
The refugees expressed their appreciation for the meeting but emphasized that the time allocated was too brief to fully convey the challenges they are facing. They have requested that the delegation return to listen to their stories in more details and to address critical issues impacting their daily lives.
