On January 24, 2025, at approximately 8:00 a.m., the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) launched a coordinated and intense assault on the city of El Fasher in North Darfur State. The attack, carried out from three directions, primarily from the northwest, involved heavy gunfire and the use of heavy weapons. These actions have caused widespread panic and fear among residents in the city’s residential neighborhoods.
This escalation follows a prior announcement by the RSF last week, where they publicly declared their intent to target El Fasher within 48 hours. The attack underscores the ongoing deterioration of the security situation in North Darfur and a significant increase in violations against innocent civilians.
Amidst the intensifying conflict, civilians are bearing the brunt of these hostilities with little to no international protection. The lack of urgent intervention further exacerbates the suffering of the population, leaving many in dire need of assistance.
DNHR’s Call to Action
The Darfur Network for Human Rights (DNHR) strongly condemns these attacks and calls on all parties involved in the conflict to:
- Respect international humanitarian law.
- Cease targeting civilians and residential areas.
- Take immediate and urgent steps to protect the civilian population.
- Facilitate and provide the necessary humanitarian assistance to those affected.
The ongoing violence in El Fasher highlights the critical need for global attention and action to address the worsening humanitarian crisis in Sudan. DNHR remains committed to advocating for the protection and rights of all civilians affected by this conflict.
