On the night of Saturday, April 12, 2025, at approximately 10:00 PM, in Garni, 27 km north of Nertiti, Central Darfur, Sudan, two unidentified armed men wearing civilian clothing and riding a motorcycle opened fire on a civilian in the Garni area, located north of Nertiti and reportedly under the control of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
The assailants, believed to be of Arab tribal origin, were armed with two Kalashnikov rifles. They ambushed the victim near Garni’s local market as he was on his way to his farm, traveling by donkey.
The victim, Mohamed Adam Ahmed Nour, a 35-year-old man from the Fur ethnic group, sustained a critical gunshot wound to his left eye, resulting in the complete loss of the eye.
Eyewitness Statement and Medical Response
According to eyewitnesses interviewed by DNHR, Mohamed was ambushed without warning. He was initially taken to the Garni medical post, but due to the severity of his condition, he was transferred to Nertiti Hospital for advanced treatment.
Legal Action
The incident was reported to the RSF unit stationed in Garni.
A formal complaint was also filed with the Unified Police Department in Nertiti.
DNHR Observations
The Garni area is under the effective control of the RSF, yet this attack occurred without any preventive intervention or immediate response.
The incident raises serious concerns about the lack of civilian protection and the unrestricted movement of armed tribal actors.
It reflects a broader pattern of targeted violence and intimidation in rural areas, particularly against non-Arab communities, which contributes to a climate of fear and insecurity across Central Darfur.
DNHR Calls for the Following Actions
- Immediate and impartial investigation into the attack and identification of the perpetrators
- Enhanced protection measures for civilians in RSF-controlled areas, including the disarmament of unauthorized armed actors
- Provision of comprehensive medical care and psychological support to the victim and his family
- Continued monitoring and documentation of similar incidents to support advocacy at the national and international levels
