On April 18, 2025, The Darfur Network for Human Rights (DNHR) strongly condemns the heinous crime that claimed the life of young journalist Mohamed Al-Fateh Abbas, who was killed by a shell launched by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on Wednesday, April 17, 2025, in the city of El Fasher. This incident occurred in the context of ongoing, indiscriminate shelling that continues to target innocent civilians.
The late journalist was one of the most promising young media professionals at El Fasher Radio. He was distinguished for his creativity in social and variety programming, acting as a sincere voice for the local community and a window into the daily lives, struggles, and hopes of the people. He was known for his kindness, pleasant demeanor, warm voice, and dedication to meaningful content.
This crime constitutes a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law and is part of a systematic campaign of violence targeting civilians—especially journalists—in the Darfur region. It calls for urgent international action by the United Nations, media freedom organizations, and the international community to protect journalists and ensure accountability for those responsible for such serious violations.
The Darfur Network for Human Rights expresses its deep sorrow and regret over the loss of this sincere media voice. We extend our heartfelt condolences and sympathy to the family of the deceased, his colleagues in the media community, and everyone who knew and loved him.
We call for accountability and justice.
