Violent Assault on Furawi Tribe Members in Wadi Markno – Linked to Historical Tribal Dispute”

On Thursday, May 15, 2025, at 11:00 PM, in Wadi Markno, northwest of Nertiti, Central Darfur State two brothers, Ismail Abdel Shafi Ahmed Suleiman (40 years old) and Omar Abdel Shafi Ahmed Suleiman (55 years old),

Both from the Furawi tribe and residing in the Waranga area were violently attacked by eight unidentified individuals in civilian clothing, believed to be nomads, while they were in a grazing pen and summer crops in Wadi Markno.

Description of the Attack

The assailants used sticks (crutches) in the attack, resulting in Ismail Abdel Shafi sustaining a broken hand, severe chest and head injuries, and loss of speech as a result of the severe beating. He was transferred to Nyala Hospital for treatment.

Omar Abdel Shafi sustained multiple injuries to the neck and body. The victim was transported to Shefkhana Waranga and from there to Nertiti Hospital for first aid. He was later transferred to Nyala Hospital due to the seriousness of his condition.

According to information received from the victims’ families, the motives behind the incident are believed to be related to an old tribal dispute that occurred six years ago, when the father of the victims was killed inside the same pen.

The perpetrators, a nomadic tribe, were arrested at the time, and blood money was paid to the affected Furawi tribe. Initial investigations indicate that the recent attack may be related to that historical dispute.

Legal Action Taken

A formal report was filed at the Unified Police Station in Nertiti for aggravated assault and attempted murder. The report was reported to the Rapid Support Forces in Waranga, Central Darfur State, who assumed security support and monitored the incident.

The wounded were transferred to specialized hospitals (Nyala) for necessary medical care and the issuance of legal medical reports.

Expedite the perpetrators’ arrest and bring them to justice. Form a joint security committee between the police and the Rapid Support Forces to monitor any potential retaliatory actions.

Activate community reconciliation efforts and review the management of pens and related disputes. Monitor the health status of the injured by legal and medical authorities.
