Sudan: Five Teachers Brutally arrested & Detained in South Darfur Nyala – Western Sudan.

On Monday 14, 2022 at 9:30 AM Sudanese security forces arrested five teachers in South Darfur Nyala province in western Sudan, according to a statement from the Sudanese Teachers’ Committee

A heavily armed force, led by a lieutenant in the police and central reserve, stormed the city of Nyala, South Darfur, on the Nyala Secondary School for Boys, and arrested a number of teachers:

1. Omer Mohammed Mohammed Mustafa, Director-Nyala secondary school
2. Mohammed Guma , teacher
3. Adel Abdurrahman Adam, teacher
4. Mohammed Hamdallah, teacher
5. Arqam Hashim, teacher

They were beaten, tortured and they were taken to an unknown destination.  On Tuesday, 15, 2022, the teachers’ committee of South Darfur Nyala, announced the temporal break of studies in all academic levels starting from Wednesday, 16, March 2022 until their colleagues get justice or freedom.

The teachers’ committee – in a statement following the vigil they carried out on, Tuesday, 15/3/2022 at Nyala Secondary School for Boys and at the Ministry of Education and Guidance – affirmed that all peaceful means were taken to restore rights in the event that their demands were not met. This comes after the Teachers Committee announced a protest in front of the Ministry of Education.

On Wednesday, 16, 2022, the designated Wali of Nyala South Darfur Mr. Hamid Al-Tijani Hannon, confirmed the suspension of studies in all state schools for an unspecified period, with the exception of the trial exam for the basic and secondary stages.

On the same note, Wali said that the city of Nyala witnessed student demonstrations in the past few days due to the high prices of bread and transportation. Demonstrations then intensified after a number of teachers at Nyala Secondary School were attacked and brutally arrested, after which the teachers announced a comprehensive strike.

On Oct. 25, 2021, the head of Sudan’s ruling military council, Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan declared a state of emergency and dissolved the transitional Sovereign Council and government, triggering mass protests across the country. This is an indication that strikes have continued to happen in different states of Sudan.

Hence, Darfur Network for Monitoring and Documentation (DNMD) calls on the authorities concerned for the release of the above-named detainees.

DNMD is continuing to monitor the situation to ensure their human rights are respected and protected throughout their period of detention.
